Australian by Nature Liver Tonic Milk Thistle 90 Capsules (21000mg) contains: Silybum Marianum fruit dry extract 300mg, derived from Silybum Marianum fruit dry 22g (21000mg) minimum, standardised to contain Silybin 150mg.

Research has shown that the active ingredient in milk thistle, called silymarin, found only in the seed shell, has liver protective and detoxifying properties. The liver protective and detoxifying properties of milk thistle were known and written about in ancient times, leading to contemporary pharmacological research on the plant and extract.

Milk Thistle (Silybum Marianum) is a purple/pinkish flower that look a bit like a pin cushion with spiky green leaves protruding from beneath the flower head. It gets its name from the milky white sap which is secreted from its leaves when they are crushed.

There are two species of milk thistle; the most common and widely utilised is silybum marianum. The extract is made from the seeds of this plant, which contains 4-6% silybin.  Silybin is the active component of the extract and is used in medicines and health supplements.

Also known as Saint Marys Thistle, Blessed Milk Thistle and Holy Thistle, it is found in many countries around the world including Australia. It grows freely in New South Wales, Victoria and widespread across the south eastern and south western seaboard of Australia.
